Strengthen Ties

REALLY LISTEN: A lot of us listen so we can formulate a reply or listen to solve, but what people need to be heard. The most powerful three words you can say, to someone you love are “Tell me More”

PRACTICE LITTLE KINDNESS: Research has long shown that for every negative interaction in a relationship, you should aim for five positive ones “small gestures go a long way” You might send your partner a text saying your partner a text dating “you looked so nice today for example, or drop off some freshly baked cookies for a friend whose has a hard week.

RESPOND TO CUES: Maybe your dad is reading the paper and says, “Huh, that’s interesting” or a friend texts you. “I’m having a day!” Those are attempts to connect, and it’s important to honor them. You’re not going to pick up on every bid for attention and neither will they. But interacting as much as you can will help your loved ones know how much you value them.

Do Workouts That Make You Want to Dance

“My fitness has taken a turn. Cardio has been put on the back burner, and I’m very OK with that. The things that have become the most important are balance and mental health. During the pandemic, when everything was paused, I created a little community. I’d get my friends together over Zoom and we would do Isaac Boots’s live workout classes. As the world started to reopen, I found myself obsessed with Dogpound. I go with my best friend; we’re extremely competitive. We have the best time — the amount of dancing we do between sets is ridiculous. Everyone knows when we’re at the gym. They say they hear us before they see us.

Mental-Health Programs: Full Funding Long Overdue

Re: “WA to get $183M from Purdue Pharma settlement, more than double original proposal” [March 3, Local News]:

What to do with this money? It is intended for addiction treatment, but the state should also try actually spending serious money on mental-health issues. I admit there has been some progress, but it’s like taking sand from the Sahara — you don’t even notice.

Over the years, the state has received large increased tax income from all forms of gambling. In addition, it has received a good share of taxes following the legalization of marijuana. Each time there is mention by the state and counties of “this time we are going to upgrade our mental-health system” — always talk but not yet.

Experts say that much of the homeless, crime issue and drug issues involve a disturbing component of mental health.

This state needs, in no particular order: a new state hospital (Western State should be used for future horror moves); new mental-health offices with temporary housing staffed by mental-health workers; more money for mental-health workers in jails, prisons, hospitals and schools.

Stop the talk and just do it. If not now, when? If not when, why?

Beautiful Limitations

Honor the limitations of your home. Its size forces you not to over crowd it. You’ll be more intentional with things you welcome into your space and, overall create better habits in what you decide to keep versus not keep. Kenika Williams

Home Repairs

I think our family house in the Philippines is angry at me. Tiles break, pipes burst, roof leaks. I may have hurt its feelings years ago when I told my mother to sell it because I was not going to live in it, which made her cry. I was a carefree, single girl working in Singapore back then. I returned home two years ago from Dubai, after my mother died, pregnant with my son. This house, like my mother, provides us refuge. I’ll show my gratitude by making small repairs and, in so doing, strengthening the bond with my mom. — Charlet Quitoriano
