Anchored

For the past 20 years, I have journaled almost daily. I collect beautiful notebooks, especially ones with butterflies. In January 2019, I bought one and opened it and found no lines upon which to write. I realized it was a four-year calendar. I was pleasantly surprised when days later my spirit said, write in each blank slot. Adding this practice to my morning prayers and meditation has brought an amazing element of self-care to my days and a deeper awareness of God’s love. When the pandemic began, I was confused and anxious, like most. And then I flipped through all the pages of blessings -and new God had us. This practice has anchored my spirit through uncharted waters in 2021. This remains the core of my start of each new day – Stephanie Rolle

Don’t Say We Can’t

“Why aren’t you married?” my partner and I are frequently asked. After all, we’ve been a couple for 25 years, shared a mortgage, and his grandchildren see me as a second granddad. Does it take a marriage license to lend a relationship integrity? We like the Joni Mitchell line, “We don’t need no piece of paper from the City Hall keeping us tied and true.” Yet, at the first hint of the Supreme Court overturning the right to same-sex marriage, we’ll sprint to City Hall. The only thing worse than being told we should marry is being told we can’t. — Jim Brosseau

5 Top Ways to Add Gratitude To Your Day

  1. Keep a gratitude journal and add to it when you can – ideally once a day
  2. Notice the beauty in nature each day – even if you can’t take a quick walk outside, looking out the window is a way to refresh your senses
  3. Avoid negative media and movies with destructive content – life is stressful enough, try not to add extra negativity to your day
  4. When you think a negative thought, try to see the positive side in the situation – flip it around to play “devil’s advocate” and explain why it’s not that bad
  5. Post quotes and images that remind you to be grateful around your house – something as simple as writing your favorite quote or even just “You’re awesome and you’ve got this” on a post-it note and sticking it on your bathroom mirror can give you a boost

Repotting your House Plants

When should I repot my houseplants? Is there anything I should know before I start?

A: When your indoor plants start growing again, usually in the early spring when the days become longer, it’s time to give them some attention. Tip the plant out of its container and look at the roots. Have they filled the container? Are they circling? Coming out of the drainage holes? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, it’s time to move your plant to a larger container.

When potting up, select a container that is only slightly larger. For instance, you would move a plant from a 6-inch pot into an 8-inch pot. Relocating into a much larger container will cause problems including root rot from inadequate drainage.

If the roots look crowded or are circling, try to gently separate them. Extreme circling roots can be trimmed and unwound. Use fresh potting soil and a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote when filling the pot. If using a systemic pesticide, now is a good time to dose with that to get a jump on aphids, mites, and mealybugs.

You may be tempted to put your indoor plants outside once the weather gets warm and sunny. This can result in severe sunburn and, in extreme cases, defoliation (loss of all leaves). Even plants that have been brought inside for winter protection should be gradually acclimated to direct sunlight. Think about your first sunburn of the season — this is how your plant feels when it’s brought outside for too long.

Success

Success isn’t the hustle; it’s the connecting with the person in front of you. That requires a moment to pause.
