Therapeutic Notes: Decision Making

My career journal is filled with scraps of paper, my dreams, countless questions, and thoughts; all of which bring a flood of memories with one powerful statement, which is “I wish someone would have told me this.” So, I’ll be the one telling you.

Would I do this for another client? Is this fair? If not, why not? What is the different about this client? Why do it for this client and not others? Is this fair? If not, why not? How is it unfair? If it is unfair, why is it even being considered?

Would I be comfortable with others such as my supervisor, my family, my peers, my clients family, the licensure board, a plaintiff attorney knowing about it (If not why not? Why the discomfort? Why wouldn’t you want ALL these people to know about it? Why the need for secrecy? Aren’t you proud of your work? Why would the licensure people have concern about this?)

Does doing this deprive others of needed resources such as my time or commitment?  (Does this deprive others of needed resources such as your time or equality or commitment? It does? Why? How do you justify that? Can you justify that? Is neglecting your other clients justified? How can neglect every be justified?)

Advice from a clinical supervisor Stay flexible- as you get to know your clients and what makes them tick, be careful not to “pigeonhole” them based on information about their culture, religion, family background, spirituality, socioeconomic status, etc. Avoid stereotypes. Be open minded. This allows the social worker to work with a wide variety or range of clients. Clients often feel, “if the social worker accepts me, then I must be okay.”

Bottom of the Pan

Watch the Bits at the Bottom of the Pan ….When you’re searing meat or chicken on a pan, you’re, of course, watching the piece of meat so that it browns nicely and doesn’t burn. But it’s equally important to watch the browned bits at the bottom of the pan—they’re a good indicator of whether your pan is running too hot. Plus, those browned bits, or sucs, are incredibly dense in flavor. When you have them, you should always try to use them by degreasing and then deglazing the pan after you’re done cooking your meat. That just means pouring out any excess fat and then pouring wine, stock, or another liquid to help scrape up all the delicious bits. That’s an easy way to make a pan sauce, a great addition to your meal.

Culinary Challenge – HELP WANTED

When a client asks me a question that I don’t have an answer to, I always reply with “I don’t know, but I will find out”. I think this shows honesty and respect as no one wants to be bullshitted. It is also a good learning opportunity for the both of us- which brings me to you for help. My latest biweekly curated produce and pantry box came with a bag of chickpea flour. I am stumped about what the hell I should do with this. If you follow my culinary adventures you are aware I do not bake, and I don’t eat fried foods. My spouse, the chef, has some ideas. YES, I love him, but I thought you and I, the everyday cooks, could figure this one out. What would you make with this chickpea flour? I welcome your ideas and suggestions and as soon as I have a good one, I will whip something up and post it.
